More Ways to Complete the Requirements

My Safety Requirement 1: Protect Yourself Rules

With permission from your parent or legal guardian, watch the Protect Yourself Rules video for the Webelos rank.

Watch the video together as a den if possible. This helps make sure everyone sees it and gives you a chance to talk about it right away. Keep the discussion simple. Ask what they would do in real situations and let them share ideas. Remind parents ahead of time so permission is not a problem.

Easy option: Show the video at a meeting and spend 10 minutes asking a few basic questions after. See Protect Yourself Video Webelos

My Safety Requirement 2: Hazardous Items

Identify items in your house that are hazardous and make sure they are stored properly.  Identify on the package where it describes what to do if someone is accidentally exposed to them.

Turn this into a simple scavenger hunt. Focus on common areas like the kitchen and bathroom instead of the whole house. Teach Scouts to look for warning labels and talk about what those labels mean. Keep safety first. Do not have them handle anything dangerous without an adult.

Easy option: Have Scouts find three hazardous items at home and tell how each one is stored safely.

More resources:

  • Hazard Labels: Walk around your home and identify items that are hazardous. Post the Poison Control information in a central place to have available should it be needed. You might find it easier to purchase pre-made label stickers rather than print your own.
  • Safe Hazardous Material Storage: Create a safe place in your meeting space to store hazardous items.

My Safety Requirement 3: Safe Spaces

Identify ways you and your family keep your home or your meeting space safe.

Keep this practical and easy to see. Walk through your meeting space or ask Scouts to walk through their home. Point out a few key safety items like exits, alarms, and first aid kits. You do not need to cover everything. Focus on helping them notice and think about safety.

Easy option: Use a simple checklist and have Scouts mark off five safety features they find.

My Safety Requirement 4: Natural Events

Complete the Be Prepared for Natural Events worksheet. Complete a worksheet for at least two natural events most likely to happen near where you live.

Focus on what actually happens in your area. Do not try to cover every type of disaster. Pick two that are most likely and talk through what to do step by step. Keep it calm and simple so Scouts feel prepared, not worried.

Easy option: Complete the worksheet for two local events during a meeting with group discussion. See Be Prepared For Natural Events.
