Nova WILD! is the Cub Scout Nova Award for investigating nature and wildlife science. To earn this award, Cub Scouts explore topics such as wildlife, endangered species, invasive species, food chains, biodiversity, ecosystems, and habitats . They must also complete one of their adventures related to natural science or do a related investigation.
When working on conservation requirements, I like to use stories about youth who are participating in conservation projects. I think it makes it more interesting to the Scouts if they see that young people can make a difference.
The Dr. Charles Townes Supernova Award can be earned by Webelos who want to learn more about science, technology, engineering, and mathematics. To earn this award, Webelos must complete the Adventures in Science or Engineer adventure. They also do some activities related to geocaching, wildfires, rockets, constellations, aquariums, or terrariums. Cub Scouts investigate the scientific method and famous scientists.
Conservation and Scouting go hand in hand. Since getting outdoors is a big part of the Cub Scout and Scouts BSA programs, it makes sense that we should teach Scouts about protecting our natural resources.
A reader asks "My cubs earned the Cub Scout World Conservation Award as Bears. In June we will be Webelos and part of our den program this year is to offer the Nova Wild program. Do they need to earn the CS World Conservation Award again or can the award they have earned be applied to this Nova program? We have not applied the Conservation Award to any other Nova Programs." STEM stands for science, technology, engineering, and mathematics. The NOVA Awards program combines knowledge of STEM concepts with hands on activities.
Use dried gourds to make a birdhouse. If you didn't grow any yourself, you can probably find some in your area at a farmer's market or even a craft shop.
Nova Awards are the BSA Awards focused on STEM - science, technology, engineering, and mathematics. The Cub Scout Nova awards program provides age appropriate activities in these areas.
The Cub Scout World Conservation Award may be earned by Wolves, Bears, or Webelos (including Webelos working on Arrow of Light). They earn the award by working on their rank appropriate conservation and nature adventures. They must also participate in a conservation project.
The Dr. Luis W. Alvarez Supernova Award can be earned by Wolf and Bear Cub Scouts who want to learn more about science, technology, engineering, and mathematics. To earn this award, Scouts must complete the Code of the Wolf or Make it Move adventure. Then they do some activities to keep track of time or money. They also study probability and learn about careers in STEM fields. They can also use the Call of the Wild or Forensics adventures to fulfill some of the requirements for this award.
