Up and Away is the Cub Scout Nova Award for investigating how fluids such as liquids and gasses affect everyday life. To earn this award, Cub Scouts explore topics related to fluid dynamics. They must design, construct, and race a Raingutter Regatta vessel, a Pinewood Derby car, or a Space Derby spaceship.

Bernoulli’s Principle Demonstration
This demonstration of Bernoulli’s Principle fits in well with a Science theme, a STEM activity, or any meeting related to flight. All you need is a couple of ping pong balls and a few items from your house.
The Forces of Flight game would make a fun addition to a pack meeting for the Soaring the Skies Cub Scout theme. Use this game when the Cub Scouts have been sitting for too long and need to get up and move around.
Nova Awards Program (STEM Award)
STEM stands for science, technology, engineering, and mathematics. The NOVA Awards program combines knowledge of STEM concepts with hands on activities.
Book Review: Getting Started in Pinewood Derby
I recently received a copy of Getting Started in Pinewood Derby by Troy Thorne. This colorful workbook goes through all of the steps involved in building a car. My favorite thing about the book is that it is directed at Cub Scouts – who should be doing most of the work on their cars.
