The Astronomy merit badge gives you a chance to explore the night sky and learn about the objects you can see above you. As you work on this badge, you will discover how stars, planets, moons, and other celestial objects move and interact. You will learn how astronomers study the universe and how new discoveries help us understand our place in it.

This badge is very hands-on. You will spend time observing the sky, tracking changes in the moon, identifying constellations, and learning how to use tools such as binoculars, telescopes, and star charts. Along the way, you will practice careful observation and learn how to record and interpret what you see.

  • Never look directly at the Sun without approved solar viewing equipment.
  • Regular sunglasses do not provide enough protection.
  • Use certified solar eclipse glasses when viewing the Sun.
  • A telescope or binoculars must have a solar filter attached to the front of the equipment.
  • Never use a telescope or binoculars to view the Sun without a proper solar filter.
  • Solar filters block harmful light and heat before they enter the optics.
  • The projection method creates an image of the Sun on a piece of paper or screen.
  • Projection allows viewing the Sun without looking through the equipment.

Requirement 4: Celestial Wonders

Do the following (if instruction is done in a planetarium, Scouts must still identify the required stars and constellations outside under the natural night sky):

  1. Identify in the sky at least 10 constellations, at least four of which are in the zodiac.
  2. Identify in the sky at eight conspicuous stars, five of which are of magnitude 1 or brighter.
  3. Make two sketches of the Big Dipper or Cassiopeia from direct observation. In one sketch, show the Big Dipper’s or Cassiopeia’s orientation in the early evening sky. Make another sketch, showing its position several hours later. In both sketches, show the North Star and the horizon. Record the date and time each sketch was made.
  4. Explain what we see when we look at the Milky Way.

What You Need To Do

Identify at least 10 constellations in the night sky. At least four of the constellations must be zodiac constellations.

  3. Describe the motion of the planets across the sky.
  4. Observe a planet and describe what you saw.

What You Need To Do

List the five most visible planets and explain which ones show phases like the Moon and which ones do not.

  • Mercury and Venus show phases similar to the Moon.

Requirement 5c: Planetary Motion

What You Need To Do

Describe how planets move across the sky as they orbit the Sun.

  • Most of the time planets move eastward relative to the stars.

Do the following:

  2. Sketch the phase and position of the Moon, at the same hour and place, for four nights (or days) within a one-week period by direct observation. Include landmarks on the horizon such as hills, trees, and buildings. Explain the changes you observe.
  3. List the factors that keep the Moon in orbit around Earth.
  4. With the aid of diagrams, explain the relative positions of the Sun, Earth, and the Moon at the times of lunar and solar eclipses, and at the times of new, first-quarter, full, and last-quarter phases of the Moon.

Requirement 6a: Sketching The Moon

What You Need To Do

Make a sketch of the Moon and label at least five lunar seas and five craters.

  • Lunar seas are called maria.
  • The maria are large, dark plains formed by ancient volcanic activity.
  • Mare Imbrium is one of the largest lunar seas.
  • Mare Serenitatis, Mare Tranquillitatis, Mare Crisium, and Mare Nectaris are easy features to label.
