Ham and Sweet Potato Foil Pack Recipe

Equipment / Materials

  • Charcoal fire
  • Heavy-duty foil
  • Knife
  • Cutting board

Ingredients

  • 1 ham steak or piece of boneless ham
  • 2 large sweet potatoes
  • 2 Granny Smith apples
  • ½ cup brown sugar (optional)
  • 2 tablespoons butter

Setup Instructions

  1. Start a charcoal fire. Let the coals get hot and turn gray.
  2. Cut four large pieces of heavy-duty foil. They should be big enough to wrap the ingredients completely.
  3. Place all cooking tools and ingredients in an easy-to-reach spot.

Recipe Instructions

  1. Cut the ham into bite-sized pieces.
  2. Peel the sweet potatoes and cut them into small cubes.
  3. Core the apples and cut them into chunks.
  4. Place ¼ of the ham, sweet potatoes, and apples on each piece of foil.
  5. Sprinkle brown sugar on top if using.
  6. Add ½ tablespoon of butter to each packet.
  7. Fold the foil over the ingredients and seal the edges tightly.
  8. Place the foil packs on the hot coals.
  9. Cook for about 20-30 minutes, turning halfway through.
  10. Carefully open one pack to check if the sweet potatoes are soft. If not, cook for a few more minutes.
  11. Let the packs cool slightly before eating.

Notes

  • Cut sweet potatoes into small pieces so they cook faster.
  • Brown sugar is optional. Some may prefer less or none.
  • Always use tongs or heat-resistant gloves to handle hot foil packs.
  • Do not place foil packs directly in flames. They should be on hot coals for even cooking.
  • Try adding cinnamon or nutmeg for extra flavor.
