Ingredients
- 1 ham steak or piece of boneless ham
- 2 large sweet potatoes
- 2 Granny Smith apples
- ½ cup brown sugar (optional)
- 2 tablespoons butter
Setup Instructions
- Start a charcoal fire. Let the coals get hot and turn gray.
- Cut four large pieces of heavy-duty foil. They should be big enough to wrap the ingredients completely.
- Place all cooking tools and ingredients in an easy-to-reach spot.
Recipe Instructions
- Cut the ham into bite-sized pieces.
- Peel the sweet potatoes and cut them into small cubes.
- Core the apples and cut them into chunks.
- Place ¼ of the ham, sweet potatoes, and apples on each piece of foil.
- Sprinkle brown sugar on top if using.
- Add ½ tablespoon of butter to each packet.
- Fold the foil over the ingredients and seal the edges tightly.
- Place the foil packs on the hot coals.
- Cook for about 20-30 minutes, turning halfway through.
- Carefully open one pack to check if the sweet potatoes are soft. If not, cook for a few more minutes.
- Let the packs cool slightly before eating.
Notes
- Cut sweet potatoes into small pieces so they cook faster.
- Brown sugar is optional. Some may prefer less or none.
- Always use tongs or heat-resistant gloves to handle hot foil packs.
- Do not place foil packs directly in flames. They should be on hot coals for even cooking.
- Try adding cinnamon or nutmeg for extra flavor.
