Sock Snowball Toss Game Directions

Equipment and Materials Needed

  • New white socks (about 12 pairs per Scout)
  • Large open indoor space (like a gym or multipurpose room)
  • Cones or tape to mark boundaries
  • Laundry baskets, bins, or cardboard boxes (optional for scoring)
  • Whistle or bell for start/stop signals

Setup Instructions

  1. Ask each Scout to bring new, unpackaged white socks. Roll each pair into a tight ball. These are your “snowballs.”
  2. Choose a large indoor area with plenty of space to move around.
  3. Use cones or tape to mark the boundaries of the play zone.
  4. Divide the Scouts into two or more equal teams.
  5. If using baskets or boxes for scoring, place them around the area or assign one to each team.
  6. Go over the rules with everyone before starting the game.

Game Play Instructions

  1. On the leader’s signal, players begin tossing sock snowballs to teammates.
  2. Scouts try to catch the socks. If they catch one, they can toss it to another teammate.
  3. If a sock hits the ground, it is “dead” and should be picked up and returned to a basket at the side.
  4. Do not throw socks at other people. Only toss them for catching.
  5. Keep playing for a set time (such as 5 to 10 minutes).
  6. At the end, count how many catches each team made or how many socks they collected in baskets (if using).

Additional Notes and Variations

  • Emphasize that this is a toss game, not a snowball fight. No aiming at faces or bodies.
  • For younger Scouts, have them toss the socks into bins instead of catching.
  • For more challenge, add a rule that Scouts must toss the socks using only one hand.
  • To add teamwork, make a rule that each sock must be passed to three people before being scored.
  • Always have adults supervising the game to make sure it stays safe and fun.
  • Collect all socks after the game and place them in a clean container for donation.

This game is simple, active, and gives Scouts a fun way to help others while learning to work as a team.
