Equipment and Materials Needed
- New white socks (about 12 pairs per Scout)
- Large open indoor space (like a gym or multipurpose room)
- Cones or tape to mark boundaries
- Laundry baskets, bins, or cardboard boxes (optional for scoring)
- Whistle or bell for start/stop signals
Setup Instructions
- Ask each Scout to bring new, unpackaged white socks. Roll each pair into a tight ball. These are your “snowballs.”
- Choose a large indoor area with plenty of space to move around.
- Use cones or tape to mark the boundaries of the play zone.
- Divide the Scouts into two or more equal teams.
- If using baskets or boxes for scoring, place them around the area or assign one to each team.
- Go over the rules with everyone before starting the game.
Game Play Instructions
- On the leader’s signal, players begin tossing sock snowballs to teammates.
- Scouts try to catch the socks. If they catch one, they can toss it to another teammate.
- If a sock hits the ground, it is “dead” and should be picked up and returned to a basket at the side.
- Do not throw socks at other people. Only toss them for catching.
- Keep playing for a set time (such as 5 to 10 minutes).
- At the end, count how many catches each team made or how many socks they collected in baskets (if using).
Additional Notes and Variations
- Emphasize that this is a toss game, not a snowball fight. No aiming at faces or bodies.
- For younger Scouts, have them toss the socks into bins instead of catching.
- For more challenge, add a rule that Scouts must toss the socks using only one hand.
- To add teamwork, make a rule that each sock must be passed to three people before being scored.
- Always have adults supervising the game to make sure it stays safe and fun.
- Collect all socks after the game and place them in a clean container for donation.
This game is simple, active, and gives Scouts a fun way to help others while learning to work as a team.
