Arrow of Light Requirements – Camping

I received this question from a reader:

Hello, Is camping over night with a scout troop, a “must” for Webelos for the Arrow of Light badge? If they just participate in scout led activities during the day, is that enough? Thanks !

It was in the “old” Cub Scout program, and sometimes that carries over. People remember older requirement and don’t check what is current. But no. It is not required under the current requirements.

That being said, if your Webelos have the opportunity to camp, try to take advantage of that. It will be an adventure for them, teach them some independence, and prepare them to join Scouts BSA.

Parents should be strongly encouraged to go also so they can learn more about Scout camping and be better prepared to support their sons as they continue on in Scouts BSA. They can set a good example by getting out of their comfort zone with their sons and daughters. And who knows. They might learn to enjoy it!

From the 2022 Guide to Safe Scouting…

“Webelos and Arrow of Light Den Camping: Each Scout should attend with their parent(s) or guardian(s). A Webelos or Arrow of Light Scout whose parent or legal guardian cannot attend a den overnight camping trip may participate under the supervision of at least two registered leaders. The leaders and a parent or legal guardian must agree to the arrangement, and all Youth Protection policies apply.”
