Webelos Forester Activity Badge

Webelos Forester Activity Badge Den Meeting Plan

The Forester activity badge also makes a fun summertime den meeting. Do it in the morning so the hike doesn’t get too hot.

Check with the nature centers and parks in your area. They might have a naturalist available to accompany your group on a brief hike.  They will be able to point out a lot of interesting things to your group.

If you are leading the hike yourself, don’t worry if you are not 100% sure about your tree and plant identification skills. Get a good guide book to help you. When you come across a tree or plant you don’t recognize, use the guide book with the Scouts. It is OK to admit to the Scouts that you are learning along with them. They will enjoy looking at the book and the plant and trying to figure out what it is.

Den Meeting Plan – Forester Activity Badge

This den meeting should take place at a nature center or park where forest trails are available. If you visit a nature center, see if there is a naturalist available to go on a hike with you.

See if you can reserve a room or space at the location you are visiting to do the activities before the hike.

Your will need to gather these materials beforehand:

  • Materials for growth rings activity
  • Materials for tree layers activity
  • If you are not familiar with the trees and plants in your area, get a guide book to help you. You and the Scouts can use the book together to identify the trees and plants.

Activities – about 30 minutes

Tree Ring Worksheet (Forester requirement 6)

Draw the Layers of a Forest (Worksheet) (Forester requirement 2)

Discuss how wildfires can benefit and harm forests – see information in your Webelos handbook (Forester requirement 9)

Hike – about 30 minutes

Go on a short hike in a forest. While hiking identify six trees and six plants. Tell how animals use them. (Forester requirement 3 and Forester requirement 4)

* If you can’t visit a forest, you can work on requirements 1 and 7 instead.

    Hi Scouter Mom,
I am new to the whole world of Cub Scouts and am taking on my son’s Webelo Den. We just had our first pack meeting and I am planning our first den meeting for September. Thank you for your 18 month plan, so helpful. Can you tell me if there is information that shows all the belt loops and pins that correspond with each badge? I appreciate your time.
    Take care,

I am still in the process of adding items to the site, but there is some information about the belt loops and pins if you look at the Cub Scouts menu at the top of the page and then select the Academics and Sports Program from that menu. There is also a Search option on the menu. Just search for the belt loop or Webelos activity badge you are looking for and you will probably find more information.

Thanks for posting all your webelos information. I see a plan in my mind, but when I get to meetings things don’t work real smooth. Your worksheets and plans seem very age appropriate (not expecting too much of these boys).

    Thank you, from Tennessee.
