Handyman Bicycle Repair

BSA Arrow of Light Den Meeting Plan 11 – Handyman

BSA provides Webelos den meeting ideas for Cub Scout den leaders on the Scouting.org website.  The eleventh in the Arrow of Light series of Webelos den meeting plans covers the Handyman Activity Badge. Webelos learn how to take care of bicycles and automobiles.

If you don’t already have the BSA Webelos den meeting plans, download BSA Arrow of Light Meeting Plan 11 to follow along with this article.

Webelos Den Meeting Plans: Handyman

Preparation and Before the Meeting

Arrange to meet at a location where there is space to work on bicycles. This meeting works best if each Webelos brings his own bike to the meeting to work on it. But if that is not possible, they can all work on one “demo” bike.

See my gathering activities page for some ideas.

Say the Scout Law and the Scout Oath . This fits in with Arrow of Light requirement 2.

Hand out recognition items.

Start with requirement 1:

With your parent, guardian, or Webelos den leader, complete the Responsibility Character Connection.

  • Know: List all the tasks you can think of that are necessary in keeping a household in good shape. Name the tasks that are your responsibility. Tell what it means to be responsible for these tasks.
  • Commit: Talk about what happens when people don’t do their jobs. Tell why it is important to be helpful and to be responsible. list ways that you can be more responsible on your own.
  • Practice: Choose one of the requirements and show how you are responsible by doing that task well for two weeks

Then move on to the hands on activities. As suggested by the plan, the best way to do this is probably in stations, so Webelos are not standing around waiting for a turn to get their hands dirty. These are the requirements you will be working on:

6. Make a repair to a bicycle, such as tightening the chain, fixing a flat tire, or adjusting the seat or handlebars.
7. Properly lubricate the chain and crank on a bicycle.
8. Properly inflate the tires on a bicycle.
10. Replace a light bulb in a fixture or lamp.
5. With adult supervision, show how to check the oil level and tire pressure on a car.
2. With adult supervision, wash a car

This is a great opportunity to get the other parents involved. Ask them which requirement they would like to do.

I like the idea to play Kim’s game with a handyman theme. Kim’s game is simply a memory game. It is a fun way to end the meeting activities if there is time.

Close with the Scout Law and  Scout Oath again. Repetition will help them memorize these.

After the Meeting

Have the Webelos help clean up the meeting place and put away any tools.
