Webelos Den Meeting Plan – Scientist Part 1

The Scientist activity badge for Webelos can be a little intimidating at first, but as long as you are prepared and keep the activities simple it is manageable. Last November, when LC was still in Webelos, I volunteered to do two den meetings with our first and second year Webelos to cover the Scientist activity badge requirements. This is what I did during the first meeting. I’ll cover what I did in the second meeting tomorrow.

Click on the links for instructions for each activity.

Den Meeting Plan:

Gathering activity – Make a poster of the water cycle – See  Water Cycle Explanation (Weather belt loop requirement 1 – for Scientist requirement 13)
Opening Ceremony – Pledge of Allegiance
A Simple Explaination of the Scientific Method (Science belt loop requirement 1 – for Scientist requirement 4)
Ziploc vs Pencil Experiment (Science belt loop requirement 2 – for Scientist requirement 4)
Snack break
Bernoullis Principal Demonstration (Scientist requirement 1)
Pascals Law (Scientist requirement 2)
Start   Growing Sugar Crystals (Scientist requirement 10)
Distribute Home Assignments Webelos Scientist Activity Badge
Closing prayer

So by the end of this meeting your scouts should have completed Scientist requirements 1 and 2. They should have partially completed 4 and 13, which will be finished at home. And they will have started requirement 10.

At the second meeting, to be posted tomorrow, they will finish requirement 10. They will also complete requirements 3, 5, 6, 7, and 14. Ideally the second meeting would be held about two weeks after the first.

Excellent Meeting Plan. We completed part 1 and it was a big success with the scouts. We are really looking forward to the second meeting. This is a great winter den meeting. The only change I made was to do alum crystals instead of sugar (Alum crystals will form in just a few hours). Thanks!

We did these in about 90 minutes. That included some time for gathering and snack.
