BSA Arrow of Light Den Meeting Plan 14 – Sportsman

BSA provides Webelos den meeting ideas for Cub Scout den leaders on the website.  The fourteenth in the Arrow of Light series of Webelos den meeting plans covers part of the Sportsman Activity Badge.  Webelos learn about cycling safety, go for a bike ride, and earn their Bicycling Belt Loop during this meeting.

If you don’t already have the BSA Webelos den meeting plans, download BSA Arrow of Light Meeting Plan 14 to follow along with this article.

Webelos Den Meeting Plans: Sportsman

Preparation and Before the Meeting

Arrange for plenty of adult supervision for this meeting. Also warn the parents ahead of time that they will need to get the bikes to the meeting. Review the BSA Bike Safety Guidelines  with any adults who will be helping at this meeting.

See my gathering activities page for some ideas.  The Cycling Safety Crossword Puzzle would be a good warm up activity for this meeting.  Or if you want to do a craft, check out Bicycle License Plate Craft .

Say the Scout Law and the Scout Oath . This fits in with Arrow of Light requirement 2.

Hand out recognition items.

This meeting is all about earning the Bicycling belt loop. There are three requirements:

1. Explain the rules of safe bicycling to your den leader or adult partner.
2. Demonstrate how to wear the proper safety equipment for bicycling
3. Show how to ride a bike safely. Ride for at least half an hour with  your den.

Check out Bike Hike Safety and Etiquette  for help with requirements one and two. Then go for a ride.

Close with the Scout Law and  Scout Oath again. Repetition will help them memorize these.

After the Meeting

Have the Webelos thank the parents who helped out. And ask for some adults to assist at the next meeting.
