Bear Den Meeting Plan – Space

My space themed Bear den meeting yesterday went well. All of the material I used was related to Bear Elective 1: Space.

This will be my last Bear den meeting with them, since they are moving on to Webelos in a little over a week. We did 10 Bear Achievements in meetings and I suggested a couple of the ones from the “Family” group for them to finish on their own. I know there are a few in the den who are scrambling to finish up, mostly because they missed several den meetings. Hopefully they will all get there in time for our big Pack Pow Wow and bonfire next week.

It’s fun to get to focus on just a couple electives at the end of the year. It seemed like Bear was a lot of work for these guys. And I’m ready to move on to Webelos with them. Of all of the Cub Scout levels, I think Webelos offers the best activities. Maybe it is because we seem to have more options to choose from in working on activity badges.

Anyway, here is the den meeting plan I used:

Bear Den Meeting Plan: Elective 1 – Space

Gathering ActivityAstronomy Terms Crossword
Opening: Pledge of Allegiance and Cub Scout Promise
Make Pinhole Planetarium
Snack: Astronaut Pudding
Make a Space Satellite Model
Discuss  Man Made and Natural Satellites (never got to this – emailing it to parents)
Discuss How Mars Is Different from Earth (never got to this either – emailing)
Announcements: Hand out recognitions. Hand out Finding the North Star so they can do this activity at home.
Closing: Reach for the Stars Prayer

    Aloha Scouter Mom,

I just discovered your FB and this blog. It’s great! Our pack is very, very new. I was helping my husband with his Bear Den and *somehow* have become the Cubmaster!

Question for you… how long are your den meetings? When I read the Program Helps book, it seems like a den meeting would take hours. We only have an hour. Between waiting for all the boys to arrive and then settle down, a half hour has gone by.

    Many thanks!

We start with about a 15 minute period where they work on the gathering activity while people are arriving and getting settled. The opening marks the “official” start of the meeting and I always start it on time whether they have all arrived or not.. Then we have an hour meeting from the opening to closing.

I don’t stick to the program helps very closely for the reason you mentioned. With the chatty temperament of my den, I just can’t get through the material. Instead I look at the requirements, plan what I think I can reasonably get done in a meeting and still make it fun. Then I plan an extra activity or two in case something doesn’t work out.

Hope that helps. Feel free to contact me if you ever need help with a specific idea.

Thanks Scouter Mom. I’m starting to feel a little better about our meeting; knowing that most dens only have an hour as well and don’t follow the program helps to the letter. Whew!

Luana, Hang in there. It takes some planning. My son’s den is lucky. We have four of us that come together and plan out a month or two at at time. But it takes us a good hour or so to plan those two months. You have to balance it all out like Scouter Mom said. You have to determine ahead of time to see what you can get in and what you can’t.

Gathering exercises are a good way to get electives in. I started creating a few for our den and saved them so the Wolf den next year will have something to build off of. I will do the same this next year for the Bears.

Scouter Mom, I just found your site a couple of weeks ago. Thanks for the resources. :)

Dear Scouter Mom I love this website it is so helpful. I am a Bear Den Leader we just had our blue and gold (Theme Space Age) so this article fit right in to our next meeting now that we are working on electives and beltloops/pins. Thanks for all your helpful info!

We are having our B&G in February and the people in charge have chosen Space. so I’ve seen some of the games and things you can make but what else did you do to make it a memorable B&G and keep the boys interested. Hope to hear back from you. Nancy
