Since I am focusing on an aquatics theme this month, I thought I’d post about water rescue methods. These are methods used to rescue someone who is in trouble in the water. You will see these methods throughout the BSA programs from Cub Scouts to Boy Scouts to Venturing.
The BSA swim test is used to determine ability level so that participants can swim in an area which is appropriate for them.
Native American lore is an important part of the Boy Scout and Cub Scout programs. This prayer is attributed to Chief Sealth (for whom Seattle is named).
This prayer is attributed to Lord Baden-Powell himself. B-P clearly believed that faith was an important component of his Scouting program. So while Scouting is not specific to any particular faith, there is a spiritual aspect to it. This prayer, based on the Scout Law, would be appropriate for most groups of Scouts.
Do you have a Pack hike planned for this spring? If not, now is the time.
I like to review some fire safety rules with my Webelos before the fire is built. That way they all know the expectations.
This favorite Cub Scout grace is a song. The tune is the theme of the Addams Family show. (Hence the name.)
Heres another silly song for you. This works well at Christmas (because of the tune) or at camp (because of the theme).
A Scout is Reverent. This prayer incorporates the twelve points of the Scout Law.
Even as winter approaches and it gets to cold for the Cub Scouts to get out tent camping, we can still get them outdoors on a day hike. Make sure your Cub Scouts know the 10 Outdoor Essentials.
Every Scout who is spending time outdoors should be familiar with the Outdoor Code. It is especially important for Webelos, Boy Scouts, and Venturers who are out camping regularly.
Duty to God is an important part of Scouting, so don’t forget to say grace at Scouting events. This is a non-denominational grace which would be appropriate at any meal.
These guidelines are appropriate for a front country adventure in an area like a park. That is the only type of hiking which is appropriate for Cub Scouts. If you are going on a back country hike, then you need to consider some other safety rules, like bringing a fire source and knife.
When you are doing first aid instruction, it is best to demonstrate it as much as possible. Here is a way they showed us at a Pow Wow a few years ago. I did this with my previous Webelos den and they really enjoyed it.
Leave No Trace is an outdoor ethics program which encourages responsible use of outdoor resources. The frontcountry guidelines are the guidelines for day-use areas like parks and trails.
One thing new scouts (and new leaders) often ask the first few times they go camping is “What do I need to bring?” Download a suggested list of personal camping gear.
Before embarking on a boating activity with your scouts, make sure everyone is aware of the Safety Afloat guidelines.
Making a terrarium is a great springtime activity. Plus – it reuses a plastic soda bottle, which is great for starting a discussion about Earth Day approaching.
