Cub Scout Archives: Hiking Cub Scout Theme
When most people think about Scouting, they think of outdoor activities. Hiking is a great way to incorportate outdoor adventure into your pack or den program. My Cub Scout hiking theme has plenty of resources to help you get started.
A few ideas for this theme are listed below, and more will gradually be added. Organize a pack meeting or den meeting around them. Or plan an overall theme for your Cub Scout year and add an element or two from the theme into your program each month.
Hiking Activities If you are out with a goal oriented group and you want them to take some time to explore, consider adding one or more additional hiking activities.
Take Me Out to the Forest Song Take Me Out to the Forest is a classic Scouting song. Sing it around the campfire, when you're out on a hike, or when you are camping.
60 Hikes Within 60 Miles (Multiple Locations Available) This is great for Scout units, because you can pick up the book and know you are going to be able to find something within a reasonable driving distance.
Powdered Sports Drink Recipe Sports drinks like Gatorade or Power Aid are designed to replenish the water and salt your body loses when you are active or exercising. You can mix up your own powdered mix to accomplish this for a fraction of the cost of purchasing these drinks by the bottle.
BSA Webelos Den Meeting 2: Naturalist and Forester BSA provides den meeting plans for den leader on the Scouting.org website. Today, I am going to go through the second Webelos plan. This plan covers part of Naturalist and part of Forester.
Homemade Energy Bars Recipe (Peanut Free) DS's den had a scout with peanut allergies, so I always had to find peanut free recipes. This easy "energy bar" recipe includes ingredients like oats and sunflower seeds.
BSA Tiger Den Meeting 5 – Let’s Go Outdoors and Song Time This is the fifth in the series of Tiger den meeting plans provide by BSA. If you are using this series, it works best if you do the plans in order. So do the previous meetings before this one. This meeting plan covers Tiger Achievement 5 - Let's Go Outdoors. It also completes Tiger Elective 6 - Song Time.
Hiking Stick Craftsman Project Cub Scouts love to get their pocketknives out and strip bark from fallen sticks. Why not make it into a project?
Pack Activity - Plan a Hike Do you have a Pack hike planned for this spring? If not, now is the time.
60 Hikes Within 60 Miles Book Series We are coming up on some prime hiking season. In the spring the temperatures are mild and it isn't buggy yet. So I am reviewing my favorite hiking book - 60 Hikes Within 60 Miles. Hopefully there is one available in your area.
The Outdoor Code Every Scout who is spending time outdoors should be familiar with the Outdoor Code. It is especially important for Webelos, Boy Scouts, and Venturers who are out camping regularly.
Hiking Safety (Front Country) These guidelines are appropriate for a front country adventure in an area like a park. That is the only type of hiking which is appropriate for Cub Scouts. If you are going on a back country hike, then you need to consider some other safety rules, like bringing a fire source and knife.
Hiking Belt Loop for Cub Scouts Hiking is one of the new additions to the Cub Scout Academics and Sports Program. I really like this added incentive to get our Cub Scouts outdoors.
Webelos Forester Activity Badge Den Meeting Plan This den meeting should take place at a nature center or park where forest trails are available. If you visit a nature center, see if there is a naturalist available to go on a hike with you.
Outdoor Scavenger Hunt Doing a scavenger hunt while hiking will help scouts really explore the world around them while they are walking. This post includes a suggested list in printable format.
