Since health and fitness is the core value for Cub Scouts for the month of May, this might be a good time to introduce the requirements for the Physical Fitness belt loop. This recognition is part of the Cub Scout Academics and Sports program.
Several of the boys in my Webelos den just completed the requirements for this belt loop. That also helped them complete their Sportsman activity badge since earning the Physical Fitness belt loop also completes part of requirement 3 for the Sportsman activity badge.
This is a really good recognition for Webelos to earn since it fits in so well with some of the activity badges. We recently worked on the Athlete activity badge and were able to do requirement 3 for this belt loop and the requirements for Athlete at the same time. Requirement 1 for this belt loop fits in with the requirements for the Fitness activity badge.

Complete these three requirements:
- Give a short report to your den or family on the dangers of drugs and alcohol.
- Practice finding your pulse and counting your heartbeats per minute. Determine your target heart rate.
- Practice five physical fitness skills regularly. Improve performance in each skill over a month. Skills could include pull-ups, curl-ups, the standing long jump, the 50-yard dash, and the softball throw.
