Circle Art – A Simple Activity to Explore Art

This circle art project uses circles to create a mosaic based on circular shapes. All you need is construction paper and scissors. And maybe some circular items for tracing.

Your Cub Scouts will learn about abstract art, fractions, and geometry all at once. This activity is also good for practicing scissors skills, so it is especially age appropriate for Lions and Tigers.

How To Make Circle Art

Materials

  • Construction paper of different colors
  • Glue

Equipment

  • Scissors

Instructions

  1. Cut one large circle, about 8 inches in diameter.
  2. Cut six smaller circles, about 3 inches in diameter.
  3. Cut one of the smaller circles in half.
  4. Cut two of the smaller circles into quarters.
  5. Cut two of the smaller circles into sixths.
  6. Cut one of the smaller circles into eighths.
  7. Arrange the smaller pieces in a pattern on the larger piece, like a mosaic.
  8. Experiment with different patterns.
  9. When you are happy with your pattern, glue it in place.

Notes

It might be helpful to have something to trace the circles before cutting.

You can show the children how to fold the paper to make it easier to cut them into halves, fourths, sixths, and eighths.

This is based on an idea found at Nurture Store. Instead of glue, this article used contact paper to attach the smaller pieces into a window hanging.
