The Boy Scout Roundtable Planning Guide suggests a Cultural Diversity/Disability Awareness feature for February 2012. BSA provides the troop program feature guides as a resource for Boy Scout troops. A PLC can use these guides to plan a series of meetings and outings around a single theme. My post Troop Program Features for Meetings and Outings has more information about these guides.
My 2007 printing of the Troop Program Features has a Cultural Awareness program feature, as does the most recent online version of Volume 1 of Troop Program Features from BSA which I can find. So I am going to focus on that program feature. Perhaps a newer version is available. But you can certainly work disabilities awareness into this program feature also.
The focus of this program feature is on respecting different cultures. Younger Scouts can work on their own “patrol culture” by developing a patrol yell and flag. Some merit badges for more experienced Scouts which fit in well with this theme are Citizenship in the World, Indian Lore, Disabilities Awareness, and Genealogy merit badges.
The big feature for the program theme is either a cultural awareness campout or a cultural fair. The idea is to encourage Scouts to be proud of their ethnic heritage. Scouts could invite a speaker from a cultural group to visit a meeting or could attend a cultural event in the area.
