Norman Rockwell's Boy Scout painting

Trustworthy Tommy Song

Trustworthy Tommy is a song to help Webelos and new Boy Scouts learn the Scout Law. Webelos need to memorize the law to earn the Arrow of Light. New Boy Scouts must memorize it for the Tenderfoot rank.

Some boys who have trouble with rote memorization will find that learning the song helps it stick with them. Eventually they should be able to say the Scout Law without the song going through their heads.

Trustworthy Tommy Song

Sing to the tune of Yankee Doodle

Trustworthy Tommy was a Scout,
Loyal to his Mother,
Helpful to the folks about and
Friendly to his brother.
Courteous to a girl he knew,
Kind unto his rabbit
Obedient to his father, too and
Cheerful in his habit.
Thrifty saving for a need
Brave and not a faker
Clean in word and thought and deed and
Reverent to his Maker

Here’s a version with a few changed words that can be printed off:
The 12 points of the Scout Law
    A Scout is:
    Trustworthy Tommy was a Scout,
    Loyal to his Oath*,
    Helpful to his family and
    Friendly to all folks.
    Courteous to all he knew,
    Kind unto his rabbits,
Obedient to his parents, too and
    Cheerful in his habit.
    Thrifty, saving for a need,
    Brave and not a faker.
Clean in word and thought and deed
    and Reverent to his Maker.

    *Scout Oath:
On my honor I will do my best to do my duty to God and my country and to obey the Scout Law; to help other people at all times; to keep myself physically strong, mentally awake, and morally straight.
