BSA Bear Den Meeting Plan 3 – Ride Right

BSA provides den meeting plans for den leader on the Scouting.org website. Today, I am going to go through the third Bear plan and including some tips and ideas which are related to the covered requirements. If you don’t already have the BSA den meeting plans, download BSA Bear Den Meeting Plan 3 to follow along with this article.

The BSA meeting plans are designed to be done in order. This plan covers Bear Achievement 14 – Ride Right.

Preparation and Before the Meeting

Most of the prep is in  determining where you will hold the meeting, gathering your materials, and reminding everyone that they need a bike and a helmet.

Gathering

My Cycling Safety Crossword Puzzle or the Bicycle License Plate Craft both make good gathering activities.

Opening

Remember to rotate this duty as mentioned in the meeting plan. You can do a simple opening flag ceremony or an outdoor ceremony.

Business

Keep it short and sweet.

Activities

For help with requirement 14a and the bike safety rules, see bike hike safety and etiquette and the BSA bike safety rules.

For help with requirement 14c and bicycle maintenance, see my article on bike repairs. For 14e, just show them how to use a lock.

For 14b, just set up a course and let the Cub Scouts have fun!

Closing

Do a simple closing ceremony to mark the end of the meeting. We often did a prayer, the Cub Scout Promise, or the Law of the Pack for closing.

After the Meeting

Ask the Cub Scouts if they enjoyed the meeting. The answer will be a resounding “Yes!” They always enjoy these active meetings. Remember to have the other parents help with snacks and cleanup. Delegation is the key to not burning out as a den leader.
