Crew Social Event and Service Project – Trunk or Treat

What Is Trunk or Treat?

Our parish grade school has a Trunk or Treat event every October. If you aren’t familiar with Trunk or Treats, it is an event where everyone parks in a lot and sits by their tailgate. The kids walk from car to car and trick or treat. The school charges $10 a car and sells pizza.

Nostalgia

Well, it turns out that many of the teenagers missed going to Trunk or Treat. The Venturing Crew had been throwing around ideas about what to do as an October activity a couple of years ago. They thought about a Halloween party or going to a haunted house. And one of them said, “Could we go to Trunk or Treat?” And then they all started reminiscing about how fun it was when they were in grade school and they participated in the event.

Volunteer

So they helped distribute pizzas at the event and do some other small jobs for the organizers. In return, they had a table where they hung out together and passed out candy (since none of them had a car).  They wore costumes and had a great time.

So this was mostly a social event for them with just a little service thrown in. They loved it!

A costume party is also a fun Halloween activity for older youth. They are not to old to enjoy dressing up. Just remind them to keep it appropriate.

This is a hilarious Halloween party game. Good for teenagers or even younger kids.

Jack O Lantern Oranges

If you want to give out a healthy alternative to candy, draw little jack o lantern faces on oranges or clementines.

At Trunk or Treat, everyone parks in the church parking lot. Then they close off the lot and the little kids go to the trunk of each car and tell their jokes and get some candy. It is just like regular trick or treating, except they go to the car instead of to somebody’s door. And since everyone is parked pretty close together, it is also a social event for the parents. There is even a trunk decorating contest. Usually there is a DJ there also.

The school charges $10 per car, and the little kids have a great time. After 2 hours, everyone gets back in their cars, they open up the entrance to the parking lot again, and everyone goes home.

The teens are a little old for trick or treating at this event, and their help is definitely appreciated.
