Red White and Blue Bread Braid Recipe

This is a recipe for cooking with Cub Scouts. This is a little more involved than some recipes I used with my Cubs, but they really enjoyed kneading the color into the bread. And even if the colors don’t come out bright red, white, and blue, Cub Scouts will enjoy eating fresh baked bread.

You can adjust this recipe for different occasions. Use different colors or make a different shape. Don’t be afraid to experiment a little. This color scheme goes with any citizenship theme. A Scout is Loyal. 🙂

Do some other den activities during your meeting while the bread is resting and while it is baking.

Red White and Blue Bread Braid Recipe

Ingredients

Materials

  • Cookie sheet
  • Spatula
  • Clean surface or large cutting board

Preparation

  • Thaw the dough beforehand
  • Cover the area with a disposable table covering if you are worried about the food coloring staining the surface

Directions

  1. Heat oven to 375.
  2. Divide the dough into three equal parts.
  3. Put some red food paste on one part and knead it in, adding more coloring if necessary. Don’t overdo it though. You won’t get a bright red color.
  4. Put some blue food paste on one part and knead it in, adding more if necessary.
  5. Roll out the three portions into three separate ropes, to about ½ inch thickness.
  6. Braid the three ropes together.
  7. Spray the cookie sheet with cooking spray.
  8. Place the braid on the sheet.
  9. Let the dough rest for about 15 minutes.
  10. Bake for about 15 minutes, or until light golden brown.
  11. Cool and eat!

Notes

  • Food coloring paste is very thick. Use a toothpick to wipe it on the dough.
  • Frozen bread dough can be found in the freezer section of most grocery stores.
