BSA provides Bear den meeting ideas for den leaders on the Scouting.org website. These Cub Scout Bear den meeting plans are step by step guides to carrying out a den meeting. In addition to the basic den meeting plans, there are supplemental plans which can be used if you have additional meetings left. Today we will look at a den meeting plan in which Bear Cub Scouts learn about folklore and storytelling . It covers some of the requirements for Bear Achievement 4 – Tall Tales.
If you don’t already have the BSA den meeting plans, download BSA Bear Den Meeting Supplemental Plan S to follow along with this article.
Cub Scout Bear Den Meeting Plans: Tall Tales
Preparation and Before the Meeting
The most difficult part of the preparation for this meeting will be getting the Bears to read two stories ahead of time. Send several reminders. See my Tall Tales page for some of the stories.
Check out my gathering activities page for ideas.
Keep business short and sweet.
Do Achievement 4a
Tell in your own words what folklore is. List some folklore stories, folk songs, or historical legends from your own state or part of the country. Play the Folklore Match Game.
The game is in your Bear handbook along with help to describe folklore.
Next do Achievement 4b
Name at least five stories about American folklore. Point out on a United States map where they happened.
Have a map ready. Some of the stories will not have an exact location. Just have them point out the region.
Finish up with Achievement 4c
Have boys tell their favorite folk story to the other boys.
Hopefully they all read some stories beforehand. If not, have them read one of the stories from my Tall Tales page and then tell it in their own words.
After the meeting
There shouldn’t be too much to clean up after this meeting. Don’t forget to ask some parents to help out next time.
