BSA provides Bear den meeting ideas for den leaders on the Scouting.org website. These Cub Scout Bear den meeting plans are step by step guides to carrying out a den meeting. In addition to the basic den meeting plans, there are supplemental plans which can be used if you have additional meetings left. Today we will look at a den meeting plan in which Bear Cub Scouts learn how to prepare for a campout . It covers one of the requirements for Bear Elective 25 – Lets Go Camping.
This would be a good meeting to do before a pack family campout or before going to summer camp.
If you don’t already have the BSA den meeting plans, download BSA Bear Den Meeting Supplemental Plan R to follow along with this article.
Cub Scout Bear Den Meeting Plans: Let’s Go Camping
Preparation and Before the Meeting
If you can, arrange for a Boy Scout to visit as suggested. Have some camping gear ready so the Bear Cub Scouts can familiarize themselves with it.
Check out my gathering activities page for ideas.
Keep business short and sweet.
Do Bear Elective 25a:
Learn about the 10 essential items you need for a hike or campout. Assemble your own kit of essential items. Explain why each item is essential.
The list is in the Bear handbook.
If you have a fireplace and permission, have the Boy Scout or leader demonstrate how to lay a fire. Make some smores or toasted Peeps.
If you can, practice putting up the tents they will be using on their campout. A “how to pack” demonstration from your Boy Scout or an experienced camper might also be helpful.
After the meeting
Get some adults to commit to help at the next meeting. Have the Bears help put away the camping gear and clean up the area.
