BSA provides Webelos den meeting ideas for Cub Scout den leaders on the Scouting.org website. The eighth in the Arrow of Light series of Webelos den meeting plans covers part of Readyman Activity Badge. This meeting focuses on first aid.
If you don’t already have the BSA Webelos den meeting plans, download BSA Arrow of Light Meeting Plan 8 to follow along with this article.
Webelos Den Meeting Plans: BSA Plans #8 – Readyman
Preparation and Before the Meeting
Gather up your supplies for the first aid demonstrations.
Consider asking your local Boy Scout troop for a couple of Scouts to help with instruction for this badge. Boy Scouts learn these skills as part of their early rank requirements. This is a good opportunity for your Webelos to interact with some Boy Scouts and it will help the Boy Scouts reinforce skills they have learned.
See my gathering activities page for some ideas.
Hand out recognitions.
You will be working on Readyman requirements 4, 5, 6, and 7:
4. Demonstrate how to help someone who is choking, and explain how to tell when you will need to take quick action.
5. Show what to do for these “hurry cases”: serious bleeding, stopped breathing, ingested poisoning, and heart attack
6. Show how to treat shock.
7. Show first aid for the following: cuts and scrapes, burns and scalds, choking, blisters on the hand and foot, tick bites, bites and stings of insects other than ticks, venomous snakebite, nosebleed, frostbite, sunburn
Follow the suggestion to use realistic first aid. It will make this requirement much more engaging for the Webelos. Check out my Fake Wounds Instructions with directions for making the “fake blood” and other ideas. (Don’t forget to look in the comments under the article.)
The relay games will be fun if you have some time at the end of the meeting.
After the Meeting
Have the Webelos help clean up the meeting place. The realistic first aid can be a little messy. Remind the Webelos about what they need to do for the next meeting and recruit some parents to help out.
