BSA provides Wolf den meeting plans for Cub Scout den leaders. Today’s plan is a supplemental den meeting plan which gives Wolves the opportunity to do some activities related to aquatics. This plan covers part of Wolf Achievement 1 – Feats of Skill, Wolf Elective 20 – Sports, and Swimming Belt Loop and Pin .
If you don’t already have the BSA den meeting plans, download BSA Supplemental Wolf Den Meeting Plan D to follow along with this article.
Wolf Den Meeting Plans – Swimming and Boating Safety Rules
Preparation and Before the Meeting
The first thing to do is to take the Safe Swim Defense and Safety Afloat online training at myscouting.org . Then you need to find a pool to do this meeting at and make sure there will be appropriate lifeguards and adult supervision present.
Gathering, Opening, and Business
It might be difficult to pull these off at the pool. Use your best judgement. You can find some ideas for aquatics related crafts on my Aquatics Cub Scout Theme page.
I’d recommend you cover Safe Swim Defense and Safety Afloat first. Then get in the water and do the swimming, treading water, and kickboard activities. The game will be the part they all really want to do. I’d recommend saving that for last. For some ideas of games you can play in the water, see my Aquatics Cub Scout Theme.
You will be doing Wolf Achievement 1h and 1j:
Using a basic swim stroke, swim 25 feet.
Tread water for 15 seconds or as long as you can. Do your best.
Next, do Wolf Elective 20b:
Know boating safety rules:
Go boating only with a grown up.
Wear a personal floatation device.
Don’t overload the boat.
Stay with the boat, even if it leaks. It will keep you afloat.
When you see lightning or a storm coming, head for shore.
Finally, work on the Swimming belt loop:
Complete these three:
Explain the rules of Safe Swim Defense. Emphasize the buddy system.
Play a recreational game in the water with your den, pack, or family.
While holding a kickboard, propel yourself 25 feet using a flutter kick across the shallow end of the swimming area.
Do a simple closing like the Scout Oath.
After the Meeting
The Wolves should help put away everything they got out at the pool. They should also thank the pool owner and any lifeguards who helped them out. They could make thank you cards as a gathering activity if there is an adequate space.
