Word on the street is that BSA will release a June Cub Scout theme called “Head West Young Man” for the June core value of Perseverance. A pack meeting plan for this westen/cowboy theme should be available soon.
How can you work this theme into your pack program? It definitely has a historical bent. Knots come to mind right away also, as well as survival skills. So here are some achievements you might be able to fit in with a “Head West Young Man” theme:
Tigers
- Making My Family Special Go See It: Learn the history of the Westward Expansion and pioneers.
Wolves
- Wolf Achievement 4 – Know Your Home and Community: Learn the history of the Westward Expansion and pioneers.
- Wolf Elective 10 – American Indian Lore: Learn about some of the first Americans who lived in the West.
- Wolf Elective 17 – Tie It Right: Work on rope and knot skills that pioneers would have used.
- Wolf Elective 23 – Lets Go Camping: Learn some outdoor survival skills
Bears
- Bear Achievement 4 – Tall Tales: Many tall tales are stories about pioneers and the West.
- Bear Achievement 8 – The Past Is Exciting and Important: Learn the history of the Westward Expansion and pioneers.
- Bear Achievement 22 – Tying It All Up: Work on rope and knot skills that pioneers would have used.
- Bear Elective 24 – American Indian Life: Learn about some of the first Americans who lived in the West.
- Bear Elective 25 – Lets Go Camping: Learn some outdoor survival skills
Webelos
- Craftsman Activity Badge : Make things by hand like the pioneers did.
- Outdoorsman Activity Badge: Improve your outdoor skills.
Cub Scout Academics and Sports Program
- Heritages Belt Loop and Pin: Learn about the history of the Westward Expansion.
